A CHEEKY cannabis smoker joked he had 'the best weed in Worcester' when he was stopped by police.
Jack Griffin made the tongue-in-cheek comment to police when they stopped him at a garage in Blackpole, Worcester.
The 22-year-old appeared before magistrates in Worcester on Thursday where he admitted attempting to possess a controlled drug of class B on December 20 last year.
The defendant of Sheriff Drive, Brierley Hill was stopped at 2.40pm after he pulled into the garage in his Ford Fiesta.
Mark Hambling, prosecuting, said: "Looking inside the vehicle, they could see a quantity of cannabis. Mr Griffin does say it's the best weed in Worcester'.
"He stated it was for his personal use. He does have scales but says he was using them so he did not get ripped off by dealers.
"He did not state where he had got it from or how much he had paid for it."
Griffin has a conviction for possession of cannabis from 2018, receiving a conditional discharge in the Black Country.
Mr Hambling requested the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs seized and a contribution towards costs of £135.
The prosecutor suggested a fine or medium level community order was appropriate, the only aggravating feature being Griffin's previous relevant conviction.
Griffin's advocate said he had been fully co-operative with police and pleaded guilty straight away, describing his remarks to police 'a little bit of banter and a comment about the best weed'.
He also stressed that the cannabis was for his client's personal use.
The defendant is not employed and is in receipt of Universal Credit.
Magistrates fined him £80, ordered him to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and make a contribution to costs of £135. When asked how the money could be paid, the defendant, who lives with his mother, replied: "Universal Credit."
A fines collection order was made which gives the court additional powers in recovering the money owed.
